GOP Rep. Greene files articles of impeachment against AG Garland

The Hill reports that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland.

This comes following the FBI’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The raid, according to reports, has to do with documents that Trump took upon leaving the White House. It is believed that the Justice Department is investigating Trump for possible violations of the Espionage Act.

Amid growing public outrage, Garland, after days of silence following the raid, provided a statement in which he admitted that he “personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter.”

Trump maintains that the raid was politically motivated and designed to further the political left’s goal of preventing him from running for the U.S. presidency in 2024.

Greene’s articles of impeachment

A number of Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), have called for Garland’s impeachment. Greene has taken the first step in this process.

The congresswoman did so on Friday by filing articles of impeachment against Garland.

The resolution states that Garland’s “personal approval to seek a search warrant for the raid on the home of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, constitutes a blatant attempt to persecute a political opponent.”

The articles further state that Garland’s “effort to unseal the search warrant for the home of former President Donald J. Trump constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”

What now?

With the Democrats currently in control of both the House and the Senate, Greene’s articles of impeachment against Garland are not going anywhere.

In order for congressional Republicans to take action, they first have to win back Congress in the midterm elections. If they do manage to do so, then they are promising to ramp up oversight of the Biden administration, including the Justice Department.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), in fact, has told Garland to “clear your calendar.”

McCarthy said:

I’ve seen enough. The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization. When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned. Attorney General Garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar.
