GOP sues Maryland Dems over ‘illegal’ partisan redistricting maps

Maryland Democrats are facing a lawsuit based on their disputed redistricting maps.

According to the Daily Caller, Republicans have described the result as “disgracefully illegal gerrymandered maps.”

Dems ignore GOP efforts to develop nonpartisan maps

Democrats have control of the state’s legislature, which is in charge of drawing up new district maps based on the most recent census numbers.

Anticipating concerns about the process, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan established an independent commission to develop more balanced legislative district maps.

The Democratic-led legislature, however, dismissed these maps in favor of plans that give the party in power a big advantage.

Specifically, the maps would put Democrats in control of all but one of the state’s eight districts. In fact, it was not immediately clear whether the GOP would even be able to claim the final district because the new maps would be harder for Republicans to win than in previous years.

As a result, the nonpartisan Fair Maps Maryland filed a lawsuit this week against the state’s General Assembly.

“This lawsuit seeks to protect the rights of all voters”

The organization behind the lawsuit describes its mission as working to combat the type of partisan congressional districts drawn by Maryland Democrats.

In its court complaint, the group is attempting to stop the general assembly from implementing the maps that it has chosen. The suit alleges that the chosen congressional maps violate the state’s constitution. Fair Maps Maryland spokesperson Doug Mayer addressed the issue in a statement denouncing the “illegal maps” created in “dark backrooms” by the state’s Democratic leaders.

“These Marylanders are victims of electoral corruption and blatant voter suppression, and this lawsuit is their only remedy to undo the damage the General Assembly has perpetuated against them for decades,” he said.

Judicial Watch Tom Fitton weighed in on the ongoing dispute in a statement defending the GOP case against Maryland Democrats.

“Unfortunately, Democrats in the legislature went beyond politics, and into abuse of power in setting up Maryland’s gerrymandered congressional maps,” Fitton said. “This lawsuit seeks to protect the rights of all voters and citizens. Simply put: politicians shouldn’t get to pick their votes.”
