Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has gained national prominence for being one of the country’s most popular Republican leaders, with some observers speculating about a possible presidential run.
However, DeSantis recently made the news for a far less pleasant reason. This week, the Republican governor announced that his wife, Casey DeSantis, has breast cancer, Fox News reports.
“I am saddened to report that Florida’s esteemed First Lady and my beloved wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer,” DeSantis said in a statement released Monday.
“As the mother of three young children, Casey is the centerpiece of our family and has made an impact on the lives of countless Floridians through her initiatives as First Lady,” DeSantis continued.
The governor added: “As she faces the most difficult test of her life, she will have not only have my unwavering support but the support of our entire family, as well as the prayers and well wishes from Floridians across our state.”
DeSantis concluded by praising his wife for being “a true fighter,” and went on to promise that “she will never, never, never give up.”
The tragic news was met with support online, with Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) tweeting that he and his wife are praying for the DeSantis family, adding, “Florida stands with you!”
Despite being a long-time critic of the governor, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried offered her well-wishes, tweeting, “Our hearts are with Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis and her family. We are all praying for you.”
“If you choose to reply to this tweet, please show some empathy. Casey is a mother of three and deserves our support in this difficult fight,” Fried added in a separate tweet.
Still, not everyone was so gracious. A Twitter user who goes by “Jewish Deplorable” posted screenshots of others who mocked the Florida first lady’s diagnosis as “karma.”
“It’s hard to have sympathy for evil people,” said one person whose Twitter profile sports a Black Lives Matter (BLM) fist. “She, DeSatan and those around her will have to wear a mask.”
Meanwhile, other commenters ridiculously suggested that Casey DeSantis might be lying about her breast cancer diagnosis, claiming she could be faking the condition in order to garner sympathy for her husband.
