Gov. Newsom claims he has no presidential ambitions

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), according to the Washington Examiner, just claimed that he has no intention of running for the U.S. presidency.

But, that’s not what many of his fellow Democrats want to hear.

“Not happening”

Newsom’s latest statement on the matter came two weekends ago at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas. There, the moderator pressed the California governor on whether he has any intention of running for the U.S. presidency in either 2024 or 2028.

“Not happening, no, no, not at all,” Newsom said.

“I’ve said it in French, Italian. I don’t know German. I mean, I cannot say it enough. But thank you. It’s humbling. It is sweet. It’s a nice thing to be asked. I mean it, and I never trust politicians, so I get why you keep asking,” Newsom added.

It’s not the first time that the California governor has made the claim that he has no intention of running for the U.S. presidency. What Newsom has not done, though, is explain why exactly that is.

The Dems 2024 problem

The Democrats do not appear to have a solid 2024 candidate.

President Joe Biden has, generally, insisted that he will be seeking reelection in 2024. Although, during a recent interview, Biden, for the first time, left open the possibility that he might not, saying:

Look, my intention, as I said, to begin with, is that I would run again. But it’s just an intention. Is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen.

Whatever the case may be, Biden is not exactly going to be riding his popularity to a second term. There have been a large number of polls and reports that have suggested that Biden does not even have great support from his own Democratic party. And, let’s not forget about his age.

So, the question becomes, if not Biden, then who? Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t appear to be a viable option. So, many Democrats have been hoping that Newsom might make a run at the U.S. presidency. But, Newsom insists that this will not happen.

Is Newsom being honest about his 2024 intentions?

It is a legitimate question to ask. The Guardian recounts some of Newsom’s recent moves, writing:

Gavin Newsom has paid for billboard banners in Mississippi, Texas, and several other Republican-run states in the lead up to the November midterms. The California governor’s campaign has aired TV advertisements in Florida, and he’s challenged the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, to a nationally televised debate.

Newsom, in short, certainly looks like a guy who is gearing up to make a run at the U.S. presidency. So, there is a possibility that, despite his claims to the contrary, he might end up running after all. We’ll see.
