In 2018, South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham (R) made headlines for his dramatic defense of then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Now, it looks like he’s gearing up for another fight.
Speaking with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, Graham said that Amy Coney Barrett, President Donald Trump’s pick to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, will likely face the same brutal and tragic attacks from the left that plagued now-Justice Kavanaugh.
“The pressure on these people on the Democratic side is enormous,” Graham said on this week’s episode of Sunday Morning Futures, according to Breitbart.
“Look at what they’re saying about President Trump,” the Republican senator added. “Look at what they’re saying about Judge Barrett.”
“Well-qualified judicial nominee”
Graham went on to characterize Barrett, a 48-year-old mom of seven who currently serves on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, as “an incredibly capable, well-qualified judicial nominee, somebody you would expect the Republicans to nominate to the court.”
Sadly, he said, “[t]he storylines about her religion are already starting.”
Barrett is known as a devout Catholic and belongs to a religious group called People of Praise. Fox News reported earlier this week that an ABC News correspondent had suggested that People of Praise may have inspired the book The Handmaid’s Tale, a suggestion that prompted fierce blowback against Barrett online.
However, according to Fox, the book’s author, Margaret Atwood, has denied that she used the group as a model, saying that she doesn’t “think this is a thread [that] can be legitimately used in this way.”
“There’s a lot of energy”
Graham, for his part, denounced the use of Barrett’s Catholicism as a basis for rejecting her nomination, arguing Sunday that such an approach runs afoul of the 1st Amendment.
“The one thing I can tell every American, we have a constitutional provision that prevents your religious choice being used against you if you’re nominated to the Supreme Court or any other position in the government,” Graham insisted, according to Breitbart. “And that’s a good thing.”
But that doesn’t mean the Democrats won’t try their best to fight it. “The amount of money coming in since the death of Justice Ginsburg tells me there’s a lot of energy…there to take out Judge Barrett,” Graham claimed, pointing listeners to his website to donate to the counter-cause, according to Breitbart. “I hate to keep saying that, but just — the money is just overwhelming.”
He went on: “The bottom line here is, they’re under a tremendous amount of pressure. But, after Kavanaugh — let me say this. After Kavanaugh, they try to destroy Judge Barrett at their own peril.”
