Republicans could impeach Vice President Kamala Harris if they take back the House, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned, saying Democrats have opened “Pandora’s box,” Breitbart reported.
The South Carolina senator pointed to Harris’ support of bailing out violent criminal last summer, saying she can be impeached by the standard Democrats have set with their second failed attempt to impeach former President Donald Trump.
Harris impeachment scenario
Graham was pressed repeatedly by host Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday to blame Trump for the Capitol riot at the basis of the impeachment, but Graham refused, saying Trump was not responsible despite some “over the top” behavior since the election.
The Republican repeated his criticism of the Senate trial as rushed and unconstitutional, before floating a scenario in which Republicans could impeach Harris for bailing out rioters.
“We’ve opened Pandora’s box to future presidents. And if you use this model, I don’t know how Kamala Harris doesn’t get impeached if the Republicans take over the House,” Graham said.
He continued: “Because she actually bailed out rioters, and one of the rioters went back to the streets and broke somebody’s head open. So we’ve opened Pandora’s box here, and I’m sad for the country.”
Harris under fire
Graham was referring to Harris’ much-criticized support of the Minnesota Freedom Fund amid riots sparked by the death of George Floyd in police custody. Bail money from the fund was used to free violent criminals, including murders and rapists. “If you’re able to, chip in now to the @MNFreedomFund to help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota,” Harris tweeted in June.
Trump’s lawyers and allies mentioned Harris’ support of the fund, as well as comments from Harris and other Democrats encouraging unrest, before and during the trial as they assailed a double standard concerning political speech.
Trump’s attorneys replayed montages of these comments at the trial, including Harris’ warning that riots are “not going to let up and they should not.”
Graham rips Democrats’ “hypocrisy”
Graham called on Republicans to work with Trump, who he called the most “vibrant” and “potent” force in the GOP, and slammed the “hypocrisy” of the Democrats for not saying “a damn word” while the country “burned down.”
“The president is a handful, and what happened [at the Capitol] on January 6th was terrible for the country. But he’s not singularly to blame,” he said.
Graham went on: “Democrats have sat on the sidelines and watched the country be burned down for a year and a half and not said a damn word, and most Republicans are tired of the hypocrisy.”
