Nikki Haley took aim at Kamala Harris on Tuesday for what the Republican called an “embarrassing” showing by the vice president when it comes to the ongoing crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border.
According to Fox News, Haley — a prominent member of the GOP best known for her roles serving as governor of South Carolina and later, as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump — didn’t hold back in her assessment of Harris over her handling of a recent surge of migrants at the border, a situation President Joe Biden put her in charge of managing on the diplomatic front.
“Any leader knows you can’t fix what you can’t see,” Haley told Fox’s America Reports on Tuesday. “[Harris] hasn’t been on the ground, she hasn’t talked to Border Patrol. She doesn’t know what is happening there.”
“It’s very real”
Haley also charged Tuesday that Biden and Harris are “in flat-out denial” when it comes to the border crisis.
Neither the president nor the vice president has visited the border since the latest surge began, reports note.
“I don’t know what [Harris’] fear is at the border, but clearly, she has one,” Haley said, according to a transcript from Breitbart. “And, I don’t know what Biden’s fear of the border is, but he has one. What I will call it is flat-out denial.”
Haley also said that Harris and Biden “think that if they don’t go, it won’t be real.”
“It’s very real,” she reminded Fox viewers.
“The job of the border”
Haley’s comments came following a recent interview by Harris in which the VP laughed off the fact that she still hasn’t been to the southern border.
According to Breitbart, the vice president’s comments came during a conversation with NBC’s Lester Holt. At one point, she said, “We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”
Challenged on this point by Holt, Harris reportedly replied with a laugh: “And, I haven’t been to Europe. And I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making.”
Notably, Harris has met with leaders from countries including Guatemala and Mexico in the hopes of nailing down and resolving the “root causes” of the border crisis. Still, Haley isn’t impressed. “She says she wants to go to the root cause, and then she brings up Europe,” the former ambassador complained Tuesday, according to Breitbart. She went on:
No one has given [Harris] the job of Europe. She’s got the job of the border. And I appreciate that she’s going to Guatemala; I appreciate she’s going to Mexico. You know why? Because both of those leaders say that the Biden administration is the reason they are having all these problems at the border.
