Former President Donald Trump’s decision on whether or not to run for the U.S. presidency could have a big impact on which Republicans decide to enter the field.
According to Breitbart, Nikki Haley has now ended the speculation that she’s willing to head-to-head with Donald Trump, stating this week that she will not run for the U.S. presidency in 2024 if Trump does.
Nikki Haley is the former Governor of South Carolina and the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She held that position during the Trump administration from 2017 to 2018.
There has been much talk about the possibility of Haley running for the U.S. presidency in 2024, as it clearly has appeared that she has been positioning herself for such a run. But, it now looks as though whether or not Haley runs is completely contingent on whether or not Trump runs.
“I would not run”
Haley’s revelation that she will not run for the presidency in 2024 if Trump does came on Monday during a press conference with reporters in South Carolina.
“I would not run if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it,” Haley said. “That’s something we’ll have a conversation about at some point, if that decision is something that has to be made.”
We, of course, still do not know whether Trump will run again in 2024. Haley, though, said that she would support Trump if he did chose to do so, simply responding “yes” when asked.
Additionally, Haley told reporters that she “had a great working relationship with [Trump].”
“I appreciated the way he let me do my job,” she said. “I thought we did some fantastically great foreign policy things together, and look, I want to just keep building on what we accomplished and not let it get torn down.”
Haley certainly departed the Trump administration while still on good terms with Trump. As the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Haley firmly stood behind Trump’s policies, and when Haley left the administration, Trump called her a “fantastic person” who did an “incredible job.”
The relationship between Trump and Haley, however, seemed to sour somewhat after the January 6th riot that occurred at the U.S. Capitol. Haley was one of the few prominent Republicans to actually come out and criticize Trump.
Then, in February, it was reported that Trump turned down a request made by Haley to meet with him. Haley confirmed on Monday that she has not spoken with Trump since the January 6th riot.
