President Joe Biden is continuing to get dismal ratings from the American people on the issue of immigration.
A new poll from Fox News finds that nearly half of Americans believe the border is less secure under Biden than in 2018, when Donald Trump was in office.
Also, a clean majority say that immigrants are rushing the border because of Biden.
Americans say border is out of control
For months, Biden has tried implausibly to deny that a crisis exists — while simultaneously blaming it all on Trump.
But the White House propaganda is not having its desired effect: 56% of voters in this poll said that Biden is “completely” or “mostly” the cause of the current border crisis, while 21% said a “little” and 15% “not at all.”
Forty-six percent of voters said that border security is now worse than in 2018, midway through Trump’s term, while 15% said it got better, and 33% said things are about the same.
Biden received his worst ratings on immigration, with 52% disapproving and just 34% approving. But as one might expect, parties are split. While 64% of Democrats approve of Biden’s job on immigration, 88% of Republicans disapprove. Conversely, 18% of Democrats disapprove, and just 7% of Republicans approve.
The rosier view of Democrats is reflected in a difference of priorities. Illegal immigration is a pressing issue for 67% of Americans, but Democrats were more concerned by the treatment of migrants by a margin of 77 to 51%.
Still, 65% of Americans are very concerned with how immigrants are treated.
Despite the more positive assessment of Democrats, Republicans disapprove of Biden’s performance by larger margins, as Fox notes. In other words, partisan blindness from Biden loyalists isn’t enough to counterbalance the plain reality: the president is screwing this thing up.
Voters gave Biden his best ratings on coronavirus, with a healthy 58% saying they approve and 34% giving a thumbs down. The poll of 1,000 or so respondents was conducted from April 18 to April 21, and has an error margin of three points.
Given these numbers, it’s not surprising that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are in no hurry to go to the border. They can deny there’s a crisis all they want, but the people aren’t fooled.
