While Republicans tuned in for President Donald Trump’s acceptance speech on Thursday evening to end this week’s Republican National Convention, the Democrats attempted to capitalize on the moment with an address earlier in the day from presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate.
As reported by The Hill, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) used the opportunity to attack Trump on multiple fronts, notably his administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s all too familiar”
While the remarks resonated within the Democratic Party’s base, some critics noted that Harris included exaggerated or misleading claims in her speech — and received little scrutiny from the media.
After addressing the hurricane approaching the Gulf Coast at the time of her speech, Harris shifted attention to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin that sparked the latest wave of civil unrest.
“As Vice President Biden put it, the shots fired at Mr. Blake pierced the soul of our nation,” she said. “It’s sickening to watch. It’s all too familiar and it must end.”
Expressing her support for those in the Black community who were “rightfully angry and exhausted” in the wake of the shooting, she sought to differentiate the peaceful demonstrators from “those looting and committing acts of violence.”
Several minutes into the address, Harris began picking apart the president’s COVID-19 plan, accusing him of showing a “reckless disregard” for human life and asserting that he has “failed to protect” Americans.
“Look at the biggest safety issue”
“This is the reality of America right now,” she said. “A reality completely absent from this week’s Republican National Convention. Because unlike the Democratic convention, which was very clear-eyed about the challenges we are facing and how we will tackle them, the Republican convention is designed for one purpose, to soothe Donald Trump’s ego, to make him feel good.”
Earlier the same day, Biden similarly castigated the Trump administration’s pandemic response, alleging that the president wants protests to turn violent as a diversion.
“It takes everybody’s eye off the ball,” he said of Trump’s frequent denunciation of the destructive demonstrations. “Want to talk about safety, look at the biggest safety issue in the nation: COVID. … He has been incompetent in the way in which he has dealt with this.”
Biden also promised to be a “fact-checker on the floor” during the upcoming presidential debates.
Given the loose grasp on the truth exhibited by both him and his running mate in their attacks on the president, though, it seems clear that someone needs to be fact-checking the Democrats.
