Kamala Harris attends Barrett hearing remotely, has technical difficulties

Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to fill a vacant seat on the Supreme Court has already caused an uproar among many on the left, including Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris (D-CA).

While the California senator was among those set to participate in Barrett’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Harris attended the hearing remotely and had difficulties getting started, the Washington Examiner reported.

Harris claimed “equal justice” is at stake

As the senator began her remarks on Monday via video, she was told by Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to start over as her face was not visible and the audio was echoing. “Can you see me now?” Harris asked after correcting the problem.

Harris then restarted her arguments, declaring, “Every American must understand that, with this nomination, equal justice under law is at stake.”

“Voting rights are at stake, workers’ rights are at stake, consumer rights are at stake, the right to a safe and legal abortion is at stake, and holding corporations accountable is at stake,” Harris said. “And there’s so much more.”

She continued, “They’re trying to get a justice onto the court in time to ensure that they can strip away the protections of the Affordable Care Act.”

Democrats use hearing to score points against Trump

Harris claimed that Barrett’s confirmation to the court would somehow mean vulnerable Americans would lose their health care, referring to Republicans’ plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, the Examiner reported.

“[I]f they succeed, it will result in millions of people losing access to health care at the worst possible time in the middle of a pandemic,” the senator said.

Harris was not the only Democratic senator who used the hearing to score political points rather than focusing on Barrett’s professional qualifications to serve on the court.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) spent much of her time attacking President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Fox News reported.

“The president could have saved so many lives,” she said. “Instead, he’s been reckless. Packing people in without masks for your nomination party, Judge Barrett.”
