While U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has taken some bold positions on the campaign trail as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, some critics are accusing her of hypocrisy based on her own prior actions and statements.
One such voice is Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity, whose website recently pointed out two examples of her perceived duplicitousness.
Dating back to the beginning of June, the first example hinged on Harris’ effort to raise money to fund the bail of protesters arrested in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“If you’re able to, chip in now to the [Minnesota Freedom Fund] to help post bail for those protests on the ground in Minnesota,” she tweeted at the time.
The post also included a link to more information about the organization — through the Democratic Party-aligned ActBlue’s campaign fundraiser website.
While her effort to help secure release on bond for individuals accused of criminal behavior struck the Hannity staff as “reckless behavior,” the article went on to question her personal actions while campaigning.
As an outspoken environmental advocate, the editorial noted that Harris herself recently shared video footage of her travel aboard a jet and in a large SUV during a campaign event in Florida.
“Rules they want for everybody else”
A tweet from one Trump campaign-aligned account also shared the video, claiming in a caption that “Democrats don’t think the rules they want for everybody else should apply to them!”
In fact, Harris tweeted less than three years ago that she believed environmental action must be taken at the local level based on the alleged shortcomings of the federal response under the Trump administration.
“Climate change is real and it poses a grave threat to our nation and our planet,” she wrote at the time. “It’s abundantly clear this [administration] won’t tackle climate change head on, so state and local governments must.”
She faced even more scrutiny this week for an apparently inadvertent reference to the “Harris administration,” though Biden has continually expressed confidence in his decision to add her to the ticket.
During the Democratic National Convention, he proclaimed that Harris had “overcome every obstacle she has ever faced,” though it remains to be seen whether the campaign will be able to overcome her record.
