After a group of Texas Democrats flew to Washington, D.C., this week in a ploy to stop a voter reform bill, the obstructionist lawmakers received high praise from some prominent progressives.
Reports indicate that Vice President Kamala Harris lauded the state legislators for the “bold” and “courageous” act.
“As American as apple pie”
In fact, she likened them to abolitionists like Frederick Douglass and Civil Rights activists who marched in Selma, Alabama decades ago.
GOP Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to arrest the Democrats upon their return to the state, but the lawmakers say they are prepared to remain in the nation’s capital until the current legislative session ends.
Harris, who has a leading role in the Biden administration’s approach to voting issues, met with the group on Tuesday, celebrating their actions for being “as American as apple pie.”
She went on to praise the Texas Democrats for their “sacrifice” before making overly generous comparisons to civil rights leaders from the nation’s history.
“They took bold, courageous action in line with the legacy of Frederick Douglass, to the legacy that involves women who marched down Pennsylvania Avenue, and all those folks who shed blood on the bridge in 1965 to pass the Voting Rights Act,” Harris asserted.
“That’s not hyperbole”
Of course, a number of critics were quick to poke fun at the vice president’s analogies, noting that the lawmakers boarded private airplanes stocked with beer for their political statement.
While Harris might have engaged in some questionable rhetoric, it paled in comparison to the heated remarks made by President Joe Biden in a speech he delivered this week in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“We’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War,” Biden claimed. “That’s not hyperbole, since the Civil War. The Confederates back then never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on January the 6th.”
Despite the out-of-touch ramblings of Biden and Harris, polling indicates that a majority of Americans support commonsense reform measures such as voter ID laws.
Some on the far left, however, continue to complain that Biden has not done enough, lobbying him to endorse efforts to kill the Senate filibuster and allow Democrats to ram through their agenda.
