The Biden administration is clearly desperate for a legislative win following Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) decision to torpedo the Build Back Better agenda earlier this month.
That may be why Vice President Kamala Harris began touting the Democrat’s two voting rights bills during an interview last weekend. At one point, she issued a nasty warning regarding will happen if the legislation fails.
‘”We have been a role model saying, ‘You can see this and aspire to this and reject autocracies and autocratic leadership,'” Harris told CBS News’ Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan on Sunday.
Democracy at stake
“Right now, we’re about to take ourselves off the map as a role model if we let people destroy one of the most important pillars of a democracy, which is free and fair elections,” Harris alleged.
The vice president went on to caution that although many in the country do not consider voting rights to be an “urgent” concern, they need to be aware of how there are forces “suppressing the right of the American people to vote.”
Harris was speaking of the For the People Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a pair of partisan Democratic bills that she pledged in June to help get passed.
“In the days and weeks ahead, I will engage the American people, and I will work with voting rights organizations, community organizations, and the private sector to help strengthen and uplift efforts on voting rights nationwide,” she said, according to Fox News.
The vice president went on to promise that the Biden administration “will also work with members of Congress to help advance these bills.”
However, many on the right argue that rather than strengthening America’s standing in the world, the proposed voting rights legislation would make U.S. elections less legitimate.
One such critic is Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who insisted earlier this year that the proposals will reduce election legitimacy.
“Under our current laws, states get to decide how much fraud they will tolerate: Florida requires you to show photo identification in order to vote. California just wants you to vote Democrat,” the Fox host said.
“If H.R. 1 passes, all 50 states will be California — the entire country will have ballot harvesting and mail-in voting. Think about that.”
