Vice President Kamala Harris has frequently faced criticism that she lacks the charisma and likability of more talented politicians, and the assessment appears to be just as harsh behind the scenes.
In fact, a new report from Politico revealed that staffers and associates of the vice president are complaining about the “abusive environment” that she has cultivated in her office.
“Thrown under the bus from the very top”
According to Politico, a number of anonymous with direct knowledge of the situation have sounded off on the matter, including one who said aides and staffers feel as if they are being “treated like s***” by Harris and other top officials.
The bombshell report comes amid backlash over her delayed visit to the southern border, which critics on both sides of the aisle insist was a missed opportunity to address the immigration crisis she was tasked by President Joe Biden to address earlier this year. Politico spoke to nearly two dozen sources in compiling its unflattering take on the work environment in the vice president’s office.
Much of the frustration was aimed at Harris’ chief of staff Tina Flournoy, a longtime Democratic operative whose management style has apparently turned off much of the staff.
Of course, Harris also received her share of the blame, including one source who said: “People are thrown under the bus from the very top, there are short fuses and it’s an abusive environment.”
That individual went on to assert that it is “not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated” rather than “supported.”
“No discipline. No plan. No strategy”
The Politico piece acknowledged that complaints from Harris’ staff are “nothing new,” citing a former U.S. Senate staffer who said her office at that time was unpredictable and amounted to “managed chaos.”
A separate report by the same outlet marked the end of Harris’ presidential bid in 2019 and referenced anonymous complaints from more than a dozen current and former staffers, associates, and even donors.
That report documented allegations of “internal strife” among her staffers, dysfunctional leadership, and a lack of consistent accountability.
“No discipline,” one senior official said at the time. “No plan. No strategy.”
The White House was quick to come to the vice president’s defense as top officials insist she still has Biden’s full support and that the critical report was a “whisper campaign” designed to “sabotage” her.
