Head of Arizona county GOP resigns over failure to attend pre-election ballot machine test: Report

A top Republican in Arizona has abruptly stepped down as controversy lingers over the 2020 presidential election.

The Republican chairwoman of Maricopa County, Rae Chornenky, resigned Tuesday following blowback over her failure to attend a pre-election ballot machine test, Breitbart reported.

“My signature and no Republicans”

According to the Arizona Republic, Chornenky’s Democratic counterpart, Stephen Slugocki, shared on Twitter that Republicans were not present at an Oct. 6 meeting to test the accuracy of Dominion Voting Systems ballot tabulators.

The Republic reports that Chornenky was aligned with the state Republican Party’s establishment and had feuded with the more conservative wing before she was pressured to quit. Among those frustrated with her absence was Republican state Rep. Kelly Townsend.

“I just found [out] that Maricopa County GOP Chairman Rae Chornenky failed to show up to certify the Dominion / Machines. For this reason, I call for her resignation, along with her 1st Vice Chair,” Townsend said in a tweet, according to the Republic.

Townsend thanked Chornenky after she stepped down on Tuesday.

“This election was rigged”

Chornenky’s resignation comes as Dominion Voting Systems has been at the center of speculation amid allegations that software glitches corrupted the election results.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden claimed victory in the presidential race last weekend, but President Donald Trump has refused to concede, alleging problems with Dominion machines and instances of voter fraud in critical states. Trump has said that he will win the election if all “legal” votes are counted, but Democrats have consistently dismissed his claims, saying there is no evidence to back them up. Nevertheless, a large portion of the country does not believe that Biden actually won the race.

On Thursday, news outlets declared Biden the winner in Arizona, where he leads by less than a percentage point.

Echoing statewide Democrats in other battleground states, Arizona’s secretary of State has refused an “independent analysis” of voter data, Breitbart reports.
