High-profile Democrat wants Gov. Ron DeSantis investigated for “kidnapping” migrants

Some red states have seen their social services strained by an influx of illegal migrants. In response, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently flew around 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, an overwhelmingly Democratic community which is home to wealthy celebrities like former President Barack Obama.

That move led to a deluge of criticism, with some now accusing the high-profile Republican of kidnapping.

California governor points to RICO statute

According to Breitbart, they include California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. On Thursday, Newsom sent a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) asking that DeSantis be investigated for violating federal human trafficking laws.

“Like millions of Americans, I have been horrified at the images of migrants being shipped on buses and planes across the country to be used as political props,” Newsom wrote.

“Clearly, transporting families, including children, across state lines under false pretenses is morally reprehensible, but it may also be illegal,” he continued.

“Several of the individuals who were transported to Martha’s Vineyard have alleged that a recruiter induced them to accept the offer of travel based on false representations that they would be transported to Boston and would receive expedited access to work authorization. The interstate travel at issue provides a basis for federal jurisdiction over this matter,” Newsom went on to insist.

“Accordingly, I strongly urge the U.S. Department of Justice (US DOJ) to open an investigation into possible criminal or civil violations of federal law based on this alleged fraudulent scheme,” the governor declared.

“In particular, I urge US DOJ to investigate whether the alleged fraudulent inducement would support charges of kidnapping under relevant state laws, which could serve as a predicate offense for charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) provisions of the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970,” he concluded.

Biden administration has been transporting migrants for months

Interestingly, Newsom has never objected to the Biden administration’s policy of flying migrants around the United States.

In May, Fox News cited a report issued by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General which pointed to “numerous instances” in which migrants were put on planes without being tested for COVID.

It pointed to multiple occasions on which ICE “could not provide evidence that single adults, family units, and [unaccompanied children] were tested for COVID-19 before transport on domestic commercial flights.”
