High-profile Maine Democrat arrested on child porn charges

Fox News reports that a high-profile Maine Democrat is facing allegations relating to child pornography.

The network stated that 75-year-old Eliot Cutler was taken into custody late last week by the Maine State Police on charges of possession of unlawful sexually explicit material of a child under 12.

High-dollar Dem donor

The arrest is said to have come after authorities conducted raids on two homes belonging to the suspect. He has since been released on $50,000 bail and is set to appear for arraignment on May 3 in a Hancock County court.

In addition to being a wealthy environmental lawyer, Fox News noted that Cutler has long been active in left-wing politics, having twice run for governor in Maine.

What’s more, he is said to have worked on the campaigns of Democratic Sen. Edmund Muskie, and former President Jimmy Carter.

He has also been a regular donor to Democratic candidates, with the Maine GOP tweeting out a list of those who have benefited from Cutler’s largesse. Recipients included President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama.

As well as being politically involved, Cutler sat on the board of the Lerner Foundation, an organization “focused on raising student aspirations and changing lives through mentoring and relationship building with young people in rural Maine communities.”

Foundation cuts ties

Don Carpenter, who serves as the foundation’s executive director, published a statement on its website that read, “We were deeply disturbed to learn about the serious accusations brought against Eliot Cutler today.”

“In his former role on the Board of Directors, Eliot was involved in high-level strategy and governance and did not directly interface with students who participated in grant funded programming,” Carpenter continued.

“His relationship with the Lerner Foundation terminated as of Wednesday, March 23, 2022. The Emanuel and Pauline A. Lerner Foundation remains laser focused on fulfilling the mission of the organization – raising post-secondary aspirations in rural Maine communities.”

Carpenter concluded by declaring, “We are dedicated in our commitment to this effort and proud of the life changing opportunities the foundation has provided for others.”
