House Democrats weighing effort to block Trump from running for office: Report

Democrats and President Joe Biden marked the anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot with an avalanche of propaganda portraying Republicans as “insurrectionists” who are against democracy.

Apparently, Democrats love “democracy” so much they want to stop their political opponents from even running for office. Indeed, Democrats are still trying to find a way to banish former President Donald Trump from the political scene more than a year after he left office.

As the New York Post reports, their latest scheme involves the U.S. Constitution and an archaic portion of the Reconstruction-era 14th Amendment.

A handful of Democrats are seizing on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prevents any government official who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding public office. The language in the amendment originally applied to former Confederate officers and officials, as the Associated Press notes.

According to the Post, Democrat Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who sits on the House’s Jan. 6 select committee; Jerry Nadler (D-NY), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee; and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) have all discussed the idea with noted #Resistance hack and law professor Laurence Tribe.

Meanwhile, a group called Free Speech for the People has been agitating for states to keep Trump’s name off the ballot in 2024.

Tribe, for his part, said that the 14th Amendment idea has “waxed and waned” as Democrats try to find a way to solidify their control of the political system.

Partisan “experts” argue that Trump could be blacklisted with a simple majority in both chambers of Congress, but Tribe says a federal judge might have to get involved. Of course, whatever phony process Democrats might choose, it’s the outcome that really matters to them.

Dems still fear Trump

While Democrats obviously don’t care about the facts, the idea that Trump led a “rebellion” will be tough to prove. The former president has not been charged with insurrection, and neither have any of the Jan. 6 participants, despite the largest prosecutorial effort in American history.

Moreover, Democrats have already impeached Trump twice, the second time for “inciting an insurrection,” after he left office. Democrats tried and failed to ban Trump from office in the second impeachment, the AP notes. He was, however, banned from most social media platforms.

Despite this coordinated attempt to turn Trump into a pariah, his support with Republicans remains solid a year after the Capitol protest, and he is surpassing Biden in the polls.

Clearly, Democrats are still afraid of Trump and see him as a threat to their continued control of the country. Now, they want to go reaching back 150 years in history to punish him. Good grief.
