A group of conservative Republicans want House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to take drastic action against his counterpart in Congress’ lower chamber.
According to Fox News, the House Freedom Caucus urged McCarthy in a letter Friday to move to remove Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as speaker of the House.
“We, the House Freedom Caucus, respectfully request that you pursue the authorization of the House Republican Conference, pursuant to Conference rules, to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31, 2021, to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosi’s authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House,” the letter begins.
A list of grievances
In their letter, the House Freedom Caucus laid out in explicit terms why they want McCarthy to make a move to oust Pelosi. The group charged that “Pelosi’s tenure is destroying the House of Representatives and our ability to faithfully represent the people we are here to serve.”
Among the reasons they listed included changes made by the Democrat speaker to House procedures, “like allowing proxy voting” during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as installing “insulting security measures like metal detectors for members coming to the floor to vote,” a system Pelosi implemented after unrest at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
But their chief grievance was far more dire. The House Freedom Caucus said Pelosi has been “dictating the ability of members of another party to serve in roles at the discretion of their own conference,” including by backing Democrats’ efforts to strip Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments.
What’s more, Pelosi’s decided just last week to block GOP Reps. Jim Banks (IN) and Jim Jordan (OH) from serving on her recently formed select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Both lawmakers were picked by McCarthy to sit on the select committee, but Pelosi vetoed those picks on the grounds that, in her words, both men “made statements and took actions that just made it ridiculous to put them on such a committee seeking the truth.” McCarthy and Republicans have responded by threatening to boycott the committee.
“Cannot go unchecked”
In its Friday letter, House Freedom Caucus concluded by saying that Pelosi’s “abuse cannot go unchecked.”
The group said the speaker’s actions show she “has no interest in representative democracy, let alone protecting institutional norms,” and charged that it’s up to Republicans to “show the America people that we will act to protect our ability to represent their interests.”
McCarthy has yet to respond to the caucus’s letter. It should be noted that trying to remove Pelosi from the speakership would be little more than a symbolic move, considering that with the Democrats in charge, the effort would have virtually no chance of success.
Still, it could go a long way in showing the American people which party is really on their side as the 2022 midterms draw closer.
