Recent polling data suggests that there is a strong possibility House Republicans will win a majority in this year’s midterm elections.
That has some on the right saying the GOP should impeach President Joe Biden. However, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has announced that impeachment won’t be at the top of his priorities.
Not for “political purposes”
According to the Washington Examiner, McCarthy made the statement during an interview on Sunday with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.
“Look, one thing we learned that the Democrats did is they used impeachment for political reasons,” McCarthy told Bartiromo.
“We believe in the rule of law,” McCarthy continued. “We’re not going to pick and choose just because somebody has power. We’re going to uphold the law.
“At any time, if someone breaks the law and the ramification becomes impeachment, we would move towards that, but we’re not going to use it for political purposes,” he added.
“Our focus is going to be securing our border, making us energy independent, bringing these prices down, making our schools and streets safe again, and holding this administration accountable,” McCarthy stressed.
“And we will take the facts to wherever the facts go because America’s been through too much with people playing politics with the concept of impeachment. But if it rises to that level, we would have the law determine that.”
Impeachment articles filed
Fox News noted last September that multiple Republican members of Congress have already filed articles of impeachment against the president, and they include Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs (R).
Biggs told Fox & Friends that the president should not remain in office, citing his handling of the border and America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan as examples.
“This president has endangered this country willfully violating his oath of office but also violated statutes and ignored statutes and instructed his team to do the same,” Biggs explained.
“Particularly on the border, or how he left Americans behind, or how they won’t give us information,” the congressman complained. “Biden actually has violated his oath of office, he has committed high crimes and misdemeanors.”
