Recent reports have suggested that coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants may be partly responsible for the surge of coronavirus cases along the U.S.-Mexico border. Now, House Republicans are looking to get to the bottom of the situation.
Breitbart reports that a group of House Republicans is asking the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide specifics about coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants, and the group has threatened the DHS with legislative action if it’s doesn’t comply.
The twenty House Republicans made their request in a letter that they sent on Monday to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
What do the Republicans want to know?
After condemning the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border crisis, the group of Republicans, in their letter to Mayorkas, ask the DHS to respond to a series of questions. Included are questions about coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants.
The Republicans, for example, ask the DHS to provide “the number of migrants who unlawfully entered the United States, since January 20, 2021, who (A) tested positive for the virus responsible for COVID-19 in the custody of [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)]; and (B) were released from the custody of the CBP while infected with such virus . . . ”
The Republicans also asked to be informed about how much money the government has spent on coronavirus tests, vaccinations, and protective equipment while caring for the illegal immigrants.
The Republicans asked for responses from the DHS by September 6, 2021, and, if they don’t get those responses, then they threatened Mayorkas with introducing a resolution that would require his department to respond.
The southern border crisis is out of control. It is estimated that over 200,000 illegal immigrants crossed the southern border in July and that around 2 million will cross by the end of the year.
The situation is being exacerbated by the coronavirus. Recently, the DHS admitted that there has been a significant increase in the number of coronavirus-positive illegal aliens in recent months. The agency even called the situation “extremely worrisome.”
This comes after reports of coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants being released into Texas cities along the southern border. What we don’t know, though, is just how many coronavirus-positive illegal immigrants are being released.
A leaked presidential briefing has revealed that roughly 20 percent of unaccompanied migrant children have tested positive for the coronavirus. But, the overall percentage remains unknown. Hence, the House Republican’s request.
Many are arguing that there is an incongruity between the Biden administration’s coronavirus approach with Americans, which is more strict, and its coronavirus approach with illegal immigrants, which has been anything but strict. The Biden administration, to address the situation, plans on offering coronavirus vaccines to illegal immigrants.
