Assistant House sergeant at arms arrested on child pornography charges

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just received some devastating — and no doubt shocking — news.

NBC News reports that Stefan Bieret, an assistant sergeant at arms in the U.S. House of Representatives, has been arrested and is facing no less than 10 felony charges of possession of child pornography.

Police in Virginia’s Fairfax County said the 41-year-old was arrested Wednesday.

They began their investigation after “the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) was notified of a potentially illicit image being uploaded to a Dropbox account,” police said in a press release cited by NBC. “Detectives executed a search warrant on the Dropbox account and discovered additional images of child sexual abuse material.”

Felony charges

As assistant House sergeant at arms, Bieret would have been partially responsible for keeping the House side of the Capitol safe and secure. He would have also served in some ceremonial and supporting duties in the lower chamber.

Before taking his current position, Bieret is reported to have served in the Capitol Police force in a civilian role. Now, however, he’s found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Police said in their Thursday press release:

[S]earch warrants led detectives to the identity of the owner of the Dropbox account as Stefan Bieret, 41, of Burke. Yesterday, detectives executed a search warrant on his home and recovered multiple electronics.

Bieret is now being held without bond in a Fairfax County jail.

More charges looming?

Notably, police indicated that Bieret may end up facing more than the 10 charges he’s already been hit with. In their press release, Fairfax Count police said “[d]etectives will continue to examine the digital evidence that was recovered from the scene and consult with the Office of the Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney for any additional charges.”

Pressed for comment by NBC News, the House Sergeant at Arms Office declined to issue a statement.

Bieret is slated to make his first court appearance on Nov. 22, according to Roll Call.
