Far-left Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is in the news again, this time for an alleged pay-off scheme involving her estranged husband.
Last year, Omar filed for divorce from her husband, Ahmed Hirsi, in the wake of media reports that she was having an affair with Washington political consultant Tim Mynett.
“There has been an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship,” Omar’s court documents said, as cited by a New York Post article. Hirsi married another woman little more than a month after the divorce was finalized, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
Mynett’s wife Beth also filed for divorce last year after Mynett admitted to having a relationship with Omar and moved out. “Defendant met Rep. Omar while working for her,’’ the divorce filing states. “Although devastated by the betrayal and deceit that preceded his abrupt declaration, Plaintiff told Defendant that she loved him, and was willing to fight for the marriage. Defendant, however, told her that was not an option for him.” The Mynetts’ divorce was finalized in December.
Cash for silence
Now, the Daily Mail reports that Omar arranged to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep her husband quiet following his discovery of her infidelity.
“He suspected she was cheating but she kept telling him he was paranoid,” a source was quoted by the British paper as saying.
“He told her he wanted to move down to D.C. to be with her but she insisted he should stay in Minneapolis with the children. Eventually, he surprised her down there and his worst fears were confirmed.”
Omar allegedly responded by promising her husband up to a quarter of a million dollars, on the condition that he did not speak publicly about the situation.
Where this money would ultimately come from is not entirely clear, although the Minnesota congresswoman has been accused of financial transgressions in the past, including allegations that she improperly funneled cash to Mynett’s consulting firm.
Local supporters are losing patience
The accusations resulted in an ethics complaint being filed against Omar in August, a move that she dismissed as a “political ploy.”
Omar may also be facing trouble back in her district, as her constituents are reportedly bothered by both her personal life as well as the focus she has put on pursing left-wing causes and LGBT issues.
“It’s almost as if she is deliberately trying to turn her Somali supporters against her,” said another source quoted by The Daily Mail.
