O’Rourke on whether he wants Biden’s help on the campaign trail: ‘I’m focused on Texas’

Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke has announced his intention to run for governor of Texas. But while the Democrat may already be hitting the campaign trail, it doesn’t seem as if he wants the president to join him.

According to a new report from Breitbart, O’Rourke suggested he isn’t interested in campaigning alongside President Joe Biden during a Sunday interview with CNN’s State of the Union.

“You campaigned for Joe Biden in 2020 after your presidential run came to an end,” host Dana Bash asked, according to Breitbart. “A recent poll shows that just 35% of Texans approve of his performance. Would you like the president to come and campaign with you?”

Beto and Biden

In response, O’Rourke tried to dodge the question — but he didn’t exactly seem thrilled at the prospect.

“This campaign in Texas is not going to be about Joe Biden,” O’Rourke said, as Breitbart reported. “It’s not going to be about Donald Trump.

“It’s not going to be about anyone from outside of our state,” the former congressman insisted. “This is going to be about the people of Texas and what the people of Texas want.”

According to O’Rourke, Texans “want the big things, like jobs, great schools, and making sure everyone can see a doctor, but they also want to see some confidence in their government.”

“I’m focused on Texas”

But Bash wasn’t done pressing the issue. “Does that mean you would prefer that he not come, based on what you just said?” she asked O’Rourke.

“It means that I’m focused on Texas and on my fellow Texans,” he replied, according to Breitbart. “Those Texans — those are the most important people. There’s no other politician or person outside of the state who can help change the course of this election for better or worse.”

He added: “That’s why I’m traveling to every part of this state, making sure that no one is written off and no one is taken for granted and that we keep the focus on Texas.”

Biden lags in the polls

That the gubernatorial hopeful would want to put some distance between himself and Biden isn’t all that surprising, considering the president’s lagging poll numbers. According to the New York Post, a new survey from CBS News and YouGov found some 70% of respondents believe things in America are going “bad” or “very bad” right now.

The poll also found that only 33% approve of how Biden has handled inflation, and just 36% feel that he has done well with immigration. No wonder even O’Rourke isn’t sold.
