Approval of Joe Biden’s coronavirus policy has buoyed him in the polls, but there are signs that may be changing.
For the first time, independents disapprove of Biden’s handling of the pandemic, according to a new Morning Consult poll.
Biden’s net rating fell for the second consecutive week to a record low of plus-11, with 52% of voters approving and 41% disapproving. Notably, just 44% of independents approved and 45% disapproved, Breitbart reported.
Democrats maintained a typically partisan stance with 80% net approval.
CDC also falls in new poll
According to Breitbart, approval of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also dropped in the survey to a record low of plus-26 — still decent, but pretty low for a traditionally non-partisan institution and way down from a plus-70 rating last March.
The steep drop likely reflects public mistrust in the health authorities owing to frequently shifting, arbitrary “guidance” throughout the pandemic.
In its latest reversal, the CDC announced this week that vaccinated individuals and schoolchildren at trivial risk from the virus should wear masks.
CDC boss Rochelle Walensky urged Americans to blame those refusing the vaccine.
Biden on COVID: Scapegoating, confusion
President Biden has also been preoccupied with bullying unvaccinated Americans as his administration continues to send mixed messages about whether the shot is effective.
“We have a pandemic because of the unvaccinated. They are sowing enormous confusion,” he complained this week, even as his administration acknowledges that vaccinated people can spread the virus. “So get vaccinated. If you haven’t, you’re not nearly as smart as I said you were,” he added.
Although Biden has trained his ire at unvaccinated people, vaccinated Americans are probably not pleased with the return of mask mandates, and Biden is keeping the threat of another lockdown looming just weeks after hailing a return to normal on July 4th. While it may be too soon to tell, it appears all the scapegoating, confusion, and false promises are having an effect.
Polling from ABC has also found that his pandemic rating is at its lowest yet, at 63%, and that Americans are more pessimistic now than at the start of his presidency. His overall approval rating hit its lowest point yet, 50%, in a Gallup poll earlier this month.
