Israel is escalating its counterattack against Hamas as the worst fighting between Israelis and Palestinians in years continues to intensify.
Within the last 48 hours, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) blew up a Hamas headquarters, killing dozens of terrorists, and began planning a possible ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, Breitbart reported.
“Time is on our side”
A dramatic video shared by the IDF appeared to show the Hamas center, described as the “main command center for its surveillance network” by the Times of Israel, turn into a giant mushroom cloud.
Israelis and Palestinians alike have suffered a devastating toll amid the violence, with more than 100 dead and 1,000 injured, according to ABC News. At least 122 Palestinians, including 31 children, and eight Israelis, including a soldier and a 6-year-old child, have died. An elderly Israeli woman died from a fall while seeking shelter from the bombs.
The conflict only seems to be intensifying as Israel continues to pound Gaza with a heavy aerial campaign that reportedly began targeting Hamas tunnels overnight Thursday.
While Israel rains hell on Hamas from the skies, IDF tanks and artillery have started pummeling targets from across the border as thousands of reservists prepare for a possible land invasion, in a dramatic escalation.
“We are gathering forces on the Gaza border, preparing them,” the IDF said, according to Breitbart. “They are studying the field and we will use them when we decide to. […] The initiative is ours and time is on our side.”
“As long as necessary”
According to ABC, Israel’s prime minister said the military operations will continue “as long as necessary” to neutralize the threat to the homeland.
Hamas has fired some 2,000 rockets at Israel, many of which have reportedly been shot down by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, since they triggered the worst fighting between Israel and Palestine since 2014 with a rocket bombardment on Monday.
Rockets were also fired at Israel Thursday from the south of Lebanon, another country with a history of conflict with Israel, causing no injuries, according to reports.
The present hostilities erupted following tensions over the planned eviction of Palestinians from homes in an East Jerusalem neighborhood, which Palestinians claim as their capital, and clashes in the holy city during Ramadan, the BBC reported.
As the world watches the conflict in concern, unrest has exploded within Israel, with scenes of mob violence between Arabs and Jews, and in the West Bank, where Israeli soldiers shot and killed six Palestinians during riots on Friday, according to ABC News, as Hamas warned Israel of “harsh lessons” if they invade Gaza.
