Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas caused unease last week when he revealed that the Biden administration is creating a new “Disinformation Governance Board.”
The new government entity is charged with combating what it deems to be online “disinformation,” and will be led by Nina Jankowicz. While White House press secretary Jen Psaki has warm words of praise for Jankowicz, there are some details she omitted.
Psaki praises Jankowicz
According to PJ Media contributor Robert Spencer, Psaki gave a glowing account of Jankowicz’s background during an interview last Friday with Fox News host Jacqui Heinrich.
“Well, let me give you a sense of who she is,” Psaki began. “She’s an expert on online disinformation. She was formerly in the Wilson Center as disinforma– she was formerly a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center.”
“She’s testified before Congress, as well as the United Kingdom and European Parliament, advised a Ukrainian foreign minister, particularly relevant in this moment, under the auspices of a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship and overseeing Russia and Belarus programs at the National Democratic Institute,” Psaki continued.
“Any hiring decisions are up to the Department of Homeland Security, but this is a person with extensive qualifications,” Psaki continued.
However, Psaki failed to mention that Jankowicz has herself been guilty of using social media to spread disinformation.
Fox News noted that Jankowicz repeatedly suggested that reports concerning Hunter Biden’s laptop originated with Russia despite mainstream media outlets such as The New York Times now admitting its authenticity.
Calls for defunding
Meanwhile, Fox News reported this week that Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) is spearheading an effort to have the disinformation board defunded.
“This really is a department of propaganda,” Fox News quoted the Republican congresswoman as stating “To say that the federal department has a say in what’s right and what’s wrong. What’s truth and what is not. This is a very dangerous place that we’ve come to.”
“This kind of stuff is terrifying,” she added. “We in Congress have the power of the purse. It is our duty to shut down this department immediately.”
“I’m calling on leadership in the Republican Party — Leader [Kevin] McCarthy, Whip [Steve] Scalise and others — to join me in calling for this department to be shut down and defunded.”
