During a House Oversight Committee hearing Thursday on the coronavirus, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) challenged Dr. Anthony Fauci over his view of coronavirus restrictions, raising his voice and going on so long that Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) finally told Jordan to “shut your mouth.”
“When do Americans get their freedom back?” Jordan barked at Fauci during the questioning. “We had 15 days to slow the spread, turned into a year of lost liberties.”
In response, Fauci said he advocates a gradual lifting of restrictions and return to normalcy “when we get the level of infection in this country low enough.”
Jordan jumped on that comment, asking Fauci to “give me a number” that he considers low enough, and Fauci said it would happen when people get vaccinated.
“We’re not talking about liberties”
“You’re indicating liberty and freedom. I look at it as a public health measure to prevent people from dying and going to hospital,” Fauci said.
When Jordan again talked about how pandemic restrictions “trampled” on people’s First Amendment rights over the last year, Fauci responded, “We’re not talking about liberties, we’re talking about a pandemic that has killed 560,000 Americans.”
Under more questioning, Fauci said he could see pulling back from restrictions when new cases dropped to about 10,000 per day.
But Jordan didn’t like that answer. “Are we going to be here two years from now, wearing masks? And I’ll be asking Dr. Fauci the same question?” he asked.
Eventually, Jordan ran out of time for his questions, but tried to keep going. “I’d like my questsion answered,” he said, as subcommittee Chairman James Clyburn (D-SC) turned the microphone over to Waters.
“Time expired, sir,” Waters said to Jordan. “You need to respect the chair and shut your mouth.”
The exchange revealed the extraordinary divide between Americans like Jordan who understand that America needs to hold on to its freedoms even during a pandemic, and those like Fauci, who think a pandemic is a perfect excuse for fascism and autocracy.
The left wants to give control of our society over to the Faucis of the world in the hopes that it will save them from pandemics and other dangers, but Jordan and the right understand that we are in danger of losing our liberties permanently if a pandemic or any emergency can be an excuse to force others to do what one group wants.
