President Joe Biden continues to speak out about Alzheimer’s in America, though his shocking statistics aren’t always on target.
The Washington Post noted on Wednesday the president’s array of comments on the growing health issue.
“You know, if we don’t do something about Alzheimer’s in America, every single, solitary hospital bed that exists in America — as the nurses can tell you — every single one will be occupied in the next 15 years with an Alzheimer’s patient — every one,” Biden said on May 27.
Four days earlier, the Post noted Biden stating, “And I say to the press here, if we don’t do something, for example about Alzheimer’s, every single bed in American hospitals today will be occupied by someone with Alzheimer’s within 20 years, every single bed.”
Looks like Alzheimer’s cases jumped a bit over the four day period!
The Real Statistics
Its investigation found that, “By 2040, 80 million Americans will be over the age of 65, according to the Urban Institute.”
The Post added, “The incidence of Alzheimer’s — a measure of risk for developing a disease — and the prevalence in the United States may actually have declined in the past 25 years, according to a variety of studies.”
Though the overall number of cases will likely grow over the next 20 years, Alzheimer patients are unlikely to take over all hospital beds.
Biden Earned Four Pinocchios
The Post concluded Biden’s comments earned him “four pinocchios” according to their fact check.
The Sun noted, “As these patients do not generally stay in the hospital for much longer than 23 days, this means that there would be an estimated 440,000 beds needed by someone with any form of dementia every day in 2040.”
It added, “This is already far below the 920,000 acute-care beds currently available in US hospitals, which also has the capacity to be much larger in 20 years time.”
The gaffes add to a growing list of YouTube fodder by the president, highlighting his “facts” aren’t always what they seem.
