Joe Biden removes mask to cough and shake hands with lawmakers

Throughout the past two years, President Joe Biden has become known as a vocal advocate for restrictive COVID policies. However, the president’s own behavior regarding the virus has often left observers shaking their heads.

As the Washington Examiner noted, that was again the case this past week when Biden appeared at a Tuesday event celebrating passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.

Biden removes mask to cough on his hand

A video clip posted to the website’s Facebook page showed Biden arriving with a mask on, which was likely due to the fact that First Lady Jill Biden recently tested positive for COVID.

Yet Biden then proceeded to remove his mask to cough on his hand and then later went on to shake the hands of others who were in attendance.

They included West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Examiner noted that guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists coughing as one of most common methods by which COVID is spread. The health agency’s website states, “If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.”

Biden has a history of pulling his mask down to cough

This is far from being the first time that the president has made a point of wearing a mask and then removed it in order to cough.

GOP rapid response director Steve Guest tweeted out footage of Biden doing the same thing at a campaign event in the fall of 2020, remarking, “You can’t make this up. Joe Biden just removed his mask to cough in his hand. Talk about unsanitary!”

That incident came roughly six months after CNN anchor Jake Tapper had to remind Biden that he was supposed to cough into his elbow rather than on his hand.

“You know, you’re supposed to cough into your elbow,” Tapper said, later adding, “It’s kinda just old school to do it with your hand. Do it into your elbow. You’re supposed to do it.”
