President Joe Biden continues to find himself mired in the controversy surrounding his son’s foreign business deals.
Emails reportedly recovered from Hunter Biden’s laptop appear to show that he and his father shared bank accounts and paid each other’s bills, which would seem to belie the president’s claims that he was not connected to his son’s controversial ties.
“Since he owes it to you”
Experts have speculated that the revelation could implicate Joe Biden in the ongoing FBI probe of Hunter Biden’s tax affairs.
One of the younger Biden’s business partners, Eric Schwerin, was reportedly handling Joe Biden’s taxes as early as 2010 and discussed an arrangement in which the father and son pay some of each other’s bills.
“Your Dad’s Delaware tax refund check came today,” Schwerin wrote in a June 2010 email to Hunter Biden. “I am depositing it in his account and writing a check in that amount back to you since he owes it to you.”
In 2019, Hunter Biden texted his daughter to complain that “half” of his salary had been used to cover his father’s bills.
While the president has subsequently spoken of a “wall” separating his service in public office from his family’s business dealings, that barrier appears to be rather porous.
“Follow the corruption trail”
At one point, Schwerin contacted Hunter Biden about an opportunity to meet Spanish bank executives after Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) reached out to set up a meeting with then-Vice President Joe Biden.
Late last year, Hunter Biden confirmed his taxes were the subject of a federal investigation. Nearly a year later, his father is president and appears to have little fear that he will be held accountable for his son’s deeds.
Among the many controversies swirling around the younger Biden is his fledgling art career, which has resulted in works being sold to unidentified buyers. One former prosecutor told the Daily Mail that the president could find himself in the midst of a money-laundering probe.
Former intelligence officer John Cassara suggested that the information found on Hunter Biden’s laptop alone could land Joe Biden in hot water — at least if he were not the current president.
“They could go at this from all different avenues,” he said. “Follow the corruption trail and then charge money laundering. This kind of thing should not be happening. … It’s an embarrassment.”
