According to CNN, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have more to be concerned about than just the outcome of their current legal battle.
The outlet cites “six entertainment industry experts” as sources for the claim that “the fate of their respective careers will be decided in the court of public opinion.”
The legal battle stems from a 2018 op-ed in which Heard claimed to be “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp alleges that Heard defamed him by making this statement, and he is seeking $50 million in damages.
Heard, herself, though, has filed a counter-lawsuit in which she claims that she was defamed by one of Depp’s attorneys who referred to her abuse allegations as a “hoax.” Heard, for her countersuit, is seeking $100 million in damages.
The trial has been ongoing for six weeks, and it is an understatement to say that it got ugly at times.
Both actors claimed to be the victims of various forms of abuse from the other. And, at least one expert opined that Depp and Heard’s relationship was one of “mutual abuse.”
Currently, the outcome of the trial is in the hands of the jury. But, perhaps the even bigger question for Heard and Depp, as CNN’s Chloe Melas points out, is how Heard and Depp will fair in the court of public opinion, which, in turn, will likely determine the future of their respective Hollywood careers.
Insiders weigh in
Melas, for the article, quotes several Hollywood insiders. And, these insiders give varying opinions about how the legal battle between Heard and Depp will impact their careers. None of these experts seem to think that the trial will end their careers.
Some of the experts pointed out that the key is whether Depp and/or Heard are still marketable. And, many of the experts seemed to be in agreement that, at least, Depp still is, pointing to the support that he has received during the trial.
But, at least one expert suggested that Hollywood might initially be reluctant to employ Depp and/or Heard. Although, this expert did predict that ultimately Heard and Depp will be cast again.
“Hollywood is also forgiving and as it moves forward and this thing stops airing and Johnny is able to move fluidly back into the business, I think he’ll reemerge again,” the expert said.
This is one of those situations where time will tell.
