Senator Josh Hawley (MO) is not mincing words over the chilling and unprecedented FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Florida home.
As Breitbart reported, the Missouri senator called for Attorney General Merrick Garland to be impeached, saying he has taken the United States into “dangerous waters.”
Calls for impeachment
Hawley decried the Biden administration’s raid on the home of Biden’s chief political opponent as an “unprecedented assault on democratic norms and the rule of law” and said it would take the United States into uncharted waters.
“The raid by Joe Biden’s FBI on the home of a former president who is also Biden’s chief political opponent is an unprecedented assault on democratic norms and the rule of law. Biden has taken our republic into dangerous waters,” he tweeted.
The White House claims that they had no advance notice of the raid, which would have been approved by Garland and FBI director Christopher Wray.
Hawley said that the FBI, which has been caught in a number of damaging scandals in recent years, must be reformed “top to bottom,” starting with Wray’s firing. Garland should be impeached “at a minimum,” he added.
“At a minimum, Garland must resign or be impeached. The search warrant must be published. Christopher Wray must be removed. And the FBI reformed top to bottom,” he tweeted.
While not all Republicans have been so direct, the raid has more or less united the party in outrage.
Garland has been silent, but House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) — expressing the sense of many on the Right — said he has “seen enough” to conclude that the DOJ “has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization.” He warned Garland to “clear your calendar.”
The raid is the most aggressive action yet taken against Trump by a justice department that many see as weaponized against conservatives. Republicans, especially Hawley, have hammered Garland for turning a blind eye to far-left extremism while targeting conservative parents as “domestic terrorists.”
It’s no secret that Garland, who is leading a massive investigation into Jan. 6, has been under immense pressure from the left to indict Trump. The raid Monday prompts further questions about Garland’s political independence from Biden, who has vented publicly about the “defeated former president.”
