Juan Williams pushes back on defunding law enforcement: ‘You need good policing’

Anti-Trump Fox host Juan Williams has urged those on the left not to surrender to their most radical instincts as nationwide unrest over the death of George Floyd fuels demands for sweeping change.

Williams, who is black, told Fox NewsThe Five that progressives should drop the idea of defunding the police, warning that it will hurt rather than help black communities.

Williams pushes back

For days, America’s cities have seen protests and widespread rioting, arson, and looting as the killing of George Floyd in police custody set off a wave of destructive anger over perceived racial injustices.

As Americans recoiled in horror at the chaos, radicals on the left, associated with groups like Black Lives Matter, drummed up proposals to defund police departments as a solution to “systemic racism.”

Pushing back, Williams said Thursday that defunding the police, far from helping poor and black neighborhoods, will just make them more vulnerable to crime. He called for the left to focus on police oversight, rather than defunding.

“To me, it’s poor communities that need higher levels of attention and engagement from the police to produce good policing, to make people feel safe in their homes and in terms of their stores, property, and the rest,” he said, according to Fox, adding that de-militarizing police is necessary and that the cops should not behave like an “occupying force” in black neighborhoods.

“You need good policing,” he insisted. “It’s clear from the statistics I see that half the people who die from police shootings are white but remember, blacks are only 13% of the population and according to these numbers black people are killed at twice [the] rate of white people by police.” Take a look:

Idea gaining steam?

Although Democrats have vowed to tackle “systemic racism” with reforms, they have similarly pushed back on more radical ideas like defunding the police.

The Congressional Black Caucus has also poured cold water on the proposal, as Fox reported separately, although it has won a handful of endorsements from the likes of progressive fire-breather Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) — and some cities are taking steps in this dangerous direction.

City Pages reports that Minneapolis, the site of Floyd’s death, is considering disbanding its police force — days after a precinct was set on fire by a mob — and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has agreed to slash the city’s police budget, according to Fox.

President Donald Trump, for his part, has slammed these moves.
