Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry made headlines last week for turning her back as the “Star-Spangled Banner” was played during a post-event ceremony, while later saying, “The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”
According to Fox News, Berry’s actions elicited widespread criticism, including from Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro. During a segment on her show, Justice with Judge Jeanine, the fired-up former New York state judge slammed Berry as a “woke activist athlete.”
In her monologue, Pirro complained that the athlete lacks gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her simply by being an American, arguing that Berry is “living the American dream.”
“Tomorrow, as we celebrate Independence Day, sadly in our country, it is far too common to see people who don’t respect our national anthem or our flag,” Pirro said, according to Fox.
The Fox News host added: “So this week, we see another woke activist athlete who turns her back on the American flag and is outraged that the national anthem is playing as she is recognized for hammer throwing at the Olympic trials in Oregon.”
It’s an “upside-down world”
Pirro then took issue with those who defended Berry for her blatantly anti-American shenanigans, some of whom alleged that criticism leveled at the Black hammer thrower was motivated by racial bigotry.
“Now, in the upside-down world we live in, if you criticize this woman for turning her back on the American Flag, you’re a racist or unamerican for not supporting her free speech,” Pirro charged.
Pirro slams Joy Behar
Pirro went on to single out comedian and The View co-host Joy Behar for suggesting that Berry’s actions were somehow patriotic.
“Now, my favorite, Joy Behar, however, insists that this activist athlete is fulfilling her patriotic duty by protesting… Joy, she’s not hurting anybody?” Pirro asked.
The former judge added: “She’s hurting every man and woman whose blood was spilled for that flag, including patriotic Black men and women, who chose to enlist and chose to fight for what you find so repulsive.”
“She is hurting every parent who lost a child, every spouse who lost a loved one, every child growing up without a father, and every veteran who can’t stand up because he lost his legs,” Pirro noted.
Breitbart reported that Behar’s comments came in response to criticism from Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), a former U.S. Navy SEAL who said, “We don’t need any more activist athletes. She should be removed from the team. The entire point of the Olympic team is to represent the United States of America.”
