Judge throws out Trump lawsuit to withhold his tax returns from Congress

A federal judge threw out a lawsuit from former President Donald Trump on Tuesday that sought to block a special congressional committee from receiving his tax return data.

“A long line of Supreme Court cases requires great deference to facially valid congressional inquiries,” Judge Trevor McFadden wrote, according to CBS News.

The judge, a Trump-appointee, added: “Even the special solicitude accorded former Presidents does not alter the outcome. The Court will therefore dismiss this case.”

Trump likely to appeal

The ruling allows Trump to appeal the case within 14 days if the two sides can’t come to an agreement. His legal team is almost certain to do so, as Trump has long opposed releasing his tax returns.

“Trump had filed suit to block the House Ways and Means Committee’s request for his returns, first made in 2019, though the Trump administration refused to acquiesce,” The New York Times reported.

“President Joe Biden has instructed the Treasury to comply with the demand. Trump’s lawyers have argued that Democrats are seeking to publish the president’s finances for political points,” it added.

What’s next?

In August, Trump’s legal team claimed the demand for his tax returns was based on efforts to release “embarrassing information.”

“Trump’s lawyers argued that the House Ways and Means Committee is seeking the returns merely to look for embarrassing information,” CNBC reported in August.

The report added: “The attorneys asked for a permanent injunction barring the IRS from complying with the committee’s request for Trump’s tax returns.”

Many wonder what “embarrassing” details will be found, if any. Unless Trump’s legal team can find a way to stop the process through an appeal at the district court level, some in Congress will soon find out, and there’s a chance that they could release the information publicly.
