Kamala Harris’ excuses are starting to get pretty absurd.
In her latest attempt at deflecting from the White House’s brazen negligence, the vice president told CNN that the crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border will not be solved “overnight” as she blamed deeply entrenched “root causes” like poverty in Central America for continuing to drive waves of immigrants north.
“It’s a complex issue. If this were easy, it would have been handled years ago,” Harris said Sunday, according to Breitbart.
“Most people don’t want to leave”
Many have been wondering just what Harris has been doing since President Joe Biden chose her last month to “respond” to the border crisis. More than 30 days later, she still has not been to the border — and neither has Biden — leaving many with the impression that she is afraid of the responsibility.
Harris did her damnedest to fake it, though, when CNN’s Dana Bash asked her on Sunday to more precisely explain what “success” would look like.
As Breitbart noted, the vice president provided little clarity as she responded with several minutes of platitudinous word salad about giving people in the Northern Triangle “hope” that “help is on the way.”
In all the stumbling and stammering was a nugget of wisdom: many people in Central America are very poor.
“I come at this issue from the perspective that most people don’t want to leave home,” Harris said, according to Breitbart. “Most people don’t want to leave home, and when they do, it’s usually for one of two reasons. They’re fleeing some harm, or they cannot stay and satisfy the basic necessities of life.”
Harris’ big deflection
Harris is right about one thing: poverty in places like Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador is not disappearing anytime soon. No one would deny that it’s a factor in immigration. But is that the problem America expects her to solve?
There are things that can be done immediately to address the crisis, but Harris and Biden would have to acknowledge the crisis in the first place — and the pivotal role of Biden’s policies in driving it. Instead, they want to absolve themselves of responsibility by focusing on “root causes” in Central America outside of their control.
This all puts Harris in an awkward spot, as she must pretend she’s doing something. The result is shameless performances like Sunday’s on CNN.
Harris is obviously clueless, but then again, what is there for her to say? She’s not even trying.
