Americans have been hit hard by rising costs, with the Labor Department reporting this week that March saw the biggest inflation jump in four decades.
Vice President Kamala Harris admitted that the problem is serious when asked about inflation in Philadelphia on Tuesday by 6 ABC Action News anchor Tamala Edwards. However, her answer left some scratching their heads.
Harris says the Biden administration is “is concerned enough to do something about it”
“I acknowledge, one must acknowledge that prices are going up and that people are working hard and, in many cases, are worried about whether they can get through the end of the month and make it all work,” Harris said.
“So that is why our administration has paid a particular priority to the various facets of, of, of peoples’ needs and their lives,” the vice president continued.
“So for example, we, then extended the child tax credit which is essentially a tax cut to help parents with the expenses of parenting such as childcare. That is why we have paid attention to what we need to do to bring down the cost of prescription drugs.”
Our advocacy is about saying that when we’re looking at, for example, folks who need penicillin, people with diabetes, they shouldn’t have to pay hundreds of dollars a month, they shouldn’t have to pay $35 a month.”
Harris then went on to talk about the burden of medical debt and blamed inflation on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, even though concerns over inflation predated the war.
A Fox Business poll from December of last year found that almost half of voters thought that the Biden administration’s policies were making inflation worse while another 28% said they were making no difference.
The vice president said that her “administration, is concerned enough to do something about it, so that is what we are doing” but offered no plan of action to combat rising food prices.
Twitter users mock Harris’ answer
Harris’ response led to her being mocked on Twitter, with one user arguing that her party is to blame for the current economic climate.
With a Democrat controlled @WhiteHouse, House of Representatives, and Senate (48 Democrats w/ 2 independents caucusing with them with @VP tie breaking vote), if not @TheDemocrats, who is to blame for all the crap policies leading to 40 year high inflation? pic.twitter.com/h6wx330XD0

Another Twitter user echoed those thoughts, insisting that the inflation spike is “all happening under Joe Biden’s watch.”
