More than 50 days after President Joe Biden tapped his vice president to lead the nation’s diplomatic response to an ongoing migration crisis, Kamala Harris still hasn’t made a trip to the border to see the situation for herself. Now, reports from Fox News and elsewhere are calling out the former California senator for her apparent inaction.
In a flashback published over the weekend, Fox recalled that Harris had visited the U.S.–Mexico border back in 2018 to protest then-President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Harris appeared at the border nearly three years ago alongside demonstrators carrying signs that said “Abolish ICE,” among other things.
“I spoke with the mothers who are there, and my heart is broken,” Harris said in remarks to fellow protesters at the time, according to Fox. “These mothers in there think that they are alone. We need to remind them and everyone else that they are not alone, and that we all stand with them.”
“Go to the border”
Nowadays, Harris is nowhere to be found when it comes to the nation’s southern border, where migrants are pouring in by the tens of thousands. In April alone, border officials encountered more than 178,000 immigrants at the U.S.–Mexico line, a noted increase over March’s numbers, NBC News reported.
While Harris insists her focus is on the “root causes” of the crisis, and not border enforcement itself, officials including former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf want to see more from the vice president.
“I’d say the vice president, if she’s actually addressing this issue, needs to do both, needs to go to the border, needs to understand the conditions that are being experienced, needs to understand and talk to the men and women of the Border Patrol, she needs to hear firsthand what they’re experiencing, because it’s all interrelated,” Wolf said, according to Fox.
“A slap in the face”
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) has said if Harris won’t start showing an interest in the crisis, Biden ought to replace her as his “border czar.”
“Vice President Harris has shown little interest in observing what is happening along the border and has failed to articulate any plan to deal with the devastating effects of this crisis,” Brnovich wrote in a recent letter to Biden, according to the Daily Caller. “Mr. President, this is a slap in the face to Arizonians who helped elect you both to the highest offices in the land.”
Brnovich also urged the Biden administration to be more transparent “with members of Congress, the media, and the American people” on the situation at the border. “I remain committed to working with anyone in your administration to secure the border and enforce the rule of law,” he wrote, as the Daily Caller reported.
“She speaks for me”
Back in March, when Biden first announced that he’d chosen Harris to lead diplomatic efforts to tamp down on border crossings, the president declared: “When she speaks, she speaks for me.”
But as Fox notes, Harris hasn’t said much since then. And her actions — or lack thereof — speak even louder than her words.
