The Hill reported this week that Vice President Kamala Harris’ communications director has become the latest Biden administration member to come down with COVID.
“A fresh outbreak” among Washington insiders
According to the website, Harris press secretary Kirsten Allen released a statement explaining that Jamal Simmons tested positive for the virus on Wednesday.
“The Vice President will follow CDC guidance for those that have been in close contact with a positive individual and will continue to consult with her physician,” Allen explained. She added, “The Vice President plans to continue with her public schedule.”
The Hill noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines “close contact” as being someone who for a cumulative total of 15 minutes was less than six feet away from an individual confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19.
It added that Simmons’s positive test was part of “a fresh outbreak” that has occurred among high-profile figures in Washington.
Other Democrats tested positive following dinner
A common feature among them was attendance at this past weekend’s Gridiron Dinner, an event where Simmons was also present.
Fellow attendees included Attorney General Merrick Garland and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, both of whom announced positive COVID tests on Wednesday.
Fox News quoted a statement from Garland’s office as reading, “Attorney General Garland this afternoon tested positive for COVID-19 through antigen tests.”
“He asked to be tested after learning that he may have been exposed to the virus,” the statement continued, adding, “At the time, he is not experiencing symptoms. The Attorney General is fully vaccinated and boosted.”
The Commerce Department issued a similar statement on Wednesday, declaring, “Today, after experiencing mild symptoms, Secretary Raimondo tested positive for COVID using an at-home antigen test.”
“She is fully-vaccinated and boosted, and she is confident that the vaccine has prevented her from experiencing more significant symptoms. She is sharing the news of her positive test out of an abundance of transparency.”
In addition to Garland and Raimondo, The Hill reported that Democratic Reps. Katherine Clark and Adam Schiff were also found to have COVID after attending the Gridiron Dinner.
