It’s been nearly three weeks since President Joe Biden announced that he was putting Vice President Kamala Harris in charge of addressing America’s migrant crisis.
However, some observers have complained that Harris doesn’t appear to be doing much about the issue. According to one prominent Republican, that’s by design.
Crisis is on purpose
During an appearance Monday on Fox & Friends, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich contended that the crisis at the border is part of a political strategy.
“If you look at a piece of history, sometimes the obvious is accurate,” Gingrich said. “They wanted Harris to be in charge of the border because they knew she wouldn’t do anything. This is not a mistake, this is why they refuse to call it a crisis.”
“They want the border to be open,” he continued. “Go back and look at the presidential primary debates. They are all in favor of open borders. They are all in favor of eliminating ICE. They are all in favor of eliminating any threat to sanctuary cities.”
“So from their perspective, the next ten or fifteen thousand people [who come in] are good because it further increases the number of illegal immigrants in the United States, which is what they want,” he said.
“Of course, it’s working,” the former House speaker insisted. “What if your goal was to have the maximum number of illegal people in the United States? How would you do better than Biden?”
History of immigration radicalism
Many have argued that Biden is ultimately to blame for the migrant crisis, with critics pointing to policy decisions and statements he made as a candidate.
Biden announced shortly after taking office that he was halting construction of former President Trump’s border wall. Fox News reported in March that “unfinished sections of the wall have become convenient gateways for migrants to enter the U.S.”
Biden also ended his predecessor’s “Remain in Mexico policy,” a rule under which asylum seekers had to wait in Mexico while their claims were evaluated.
During a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate, Biden declared, “We’re a nation that says, ‘You want to flee, and you’re fleeing oppression, you should come,'” Fox News reported.
The network noted that Harris also has a history of making radical statements on immigration, even comparing ICE to the Ku Klux Klan.
