May 5, 2023

Vice President Kamala Harris is met with top technology executives to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, according to the White House.

Harris will connect with leaders from Google, Microsoft, Open AI and Anthropic as part of the special event.

The details

"The vice president will also be joined by other senior members of the Biden administration, including Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce; Jeff Zients, Biden’s chief of staff; Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security advisor and Arati Prabhakar, the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, among others," CNBC reported.

"An invitation to the event, which was viewed by CNBC, said the officials plan to engage in a 'frank discussion' with the CEOs about AI, particularly regarding the risks stemming from 'current and near-term' development of the technology," it added.

The White House's statement

"AI is one of the most powerful technologies of our time, but in order to seize the opportunities it presents, we must first mitigate its risks," the White House said in a fact sheet about the event.

"President Biden has been clear that when it comes to AI, we must place people and communities at the center by supporting responsible innovation that serves the public good, while protecting our society, security, and economy. Importantly, this means that companies have a fundamental responsibility to make sure their products are safe before they are deployed or made public," it added.

President Joe Biden also stopped by the event for a brief greeting.

"Artificial Intelligence is one of the most powerful tools of our time, but to seize its opportunities, we must first mitigate its risks," he tweeted.

"Today, I dropped by a meeting with AI leaders to touch on the importance of innovating responsibly and protecting people's rights and safety," he added.

The latest focus on AI shows the impact the new technology is having at the highest level of government.

The emphasis on AI with top tech companies also reveals the need to closely monitor developments in order to benefit from the new tool without the loss of American freedoms.
