There is little disputing that far-left ideologies have become deeply embedded in public school systems across the country, and that is simply too much to bear for some teachers who fundamentally disagree with the progressive beliefs being foisted upon their students.
In fact, it led one sixth-grade teacher in Kansas to recently resign the position he’s held for 13 years, with an announced mask mandate for all unvaccinated teachers and students being the “final straw” for him, The Daily Wire reported.
In addition to the mask mandate, the now-former sixth-grade math teacher at Comanche Elementary School in the Shawnee Mission School District also cited the imposition of critical race theory on the classroom, a policy of secrecy toward inquisitive parents, low education standards during the COVID-19 pandemic, and excess district spending on unnecessary technological upgrades as reasons for his decision.
The “final straw”
The resignation of Josiah Enyart, an award-winning teacher with 13 years of experience, was first reported by The Sentinel, which quoted Enyart as saying of the district’s mask mandate announced in late July, “That was my final straw.”
Incredibly, the outlet noted that in response to Enyart’s resignation the school district demanded that he return any district-provided equipment and pay a $1,000 fine for breaking his contract past a certain cut-off date.
Enyart countered by claiming the terms of the contract were already broken by the district’s mask mandate and told The Sentinel, “I will be bringing my stuff, but I don’t plan on bringing a check.”
A long train of abuses
Enyart’s problems with the district actually began several years ago when the district spent $20 million on a technology upgrade that provided iPads and Macbooks to every student. Enyart had questioned the necessity of such an expenditure — particularly given an initial lack of internet access — and noted that the change had compelled other older and experienced teachers to resign or retire.
A few years after that, Enyart’s frustrations grew with regard to the district’s implementation of so-called “Deep Equity” training for all teachers, as reported separately by The Sentinel, a critical race theory-based program that cost $400,000 and posited that all white people were inherently racist oppressors who benefited from and perpetuated a systemically racist and oppressive society against minorities.
Arguably the worst part of that training, according to Enyart, was that it explicitly instructed teachers to “reject and resist any parents who disagree with it.”
The Sentinel noted that Enyart also lamented the district’s low standards for students with regard to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and complained that teachers’ hands were tied with respect to holding students accountable for lack of effort or even non-attendance.
Enyart doubles down
“I can’t believe the lack of transparency with curriculums, teacher trainings, in-class activities based on the trainings, and top-down regulations used as indoctrination tools,” Enyart told Fox News, adding that he took particular exception to the exclusion of parents from any discussion or input with regard to what was being taught to their own children.
In addition to resigning his position as a math teacher, Enyart also pulled his own student children out of the district and plans to homeschool them for at least the next year, telling Fox, “Bottom line is, as much as I want to be there for the students in my previous school, my first priority is the safety and well-being of my own children. I am saddened that I had to give up my career with the district simply to have the right to raise my children as I see fit.”
