Entrepreneur and rapper Kanye West, who in recent weeks received criticism and suffered financial consequences for comments perceived as anti-Semitic, has teased the possibility of a 2024 presidential run, though he has not actually formally declared his candidacy, and also recently met with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
In a video posted to Twitter on Thursday, West asserted that Trump became angry during that meeting when asked to be West’s running mate, and also shared that Trump had unkind words to say about West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, TMZ reported.
West asked Trump to be his running mate
“I think the thing Trump was most perturbed about — me asking him to be my vice president,” West said in the video. “I think that was lower on the list of things that caught him off guard.”
He went on to discuss his belief that Trump, on the advice of others, has ignored or distanced himself from his true “loyalists,” and encouraged the former president to reassociate himself with some of the loyal individuals who surrounded him in 2016 but have since been canceled and demonized by the media and political establishment.
West also says he pointedly asked Trump, “Why, when you had the chance, did you not free the January Sixers,” a reference to those individuals still imprisoned or facing prosecution for their participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot of 2021.
West claims Trump insulted Kim Kardashian
West then recounted a conversation he had with Trump about Alice Johnson, an older black woman serving a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense whose sentence was commuted by the president in 2018, at the urging of Kim Kardashian West, and then was granted a full pardon by Trump in 2020, according to Politico.
The rapper turned possible presidential contender said in the video that Trump shared with him a “would-be mob-esque story” about “all that he went through to get Alice Johnson out of jail, and how he didn’t do it for Kim but he did it for me.”
“But then he goes on to say that Kim is a …,” West claimed, though the alleged insult was bleeped out, “And you can tell her I said that. And I was thinking, like, that’s the mother of my children.”
West says Trump was “screaming” at dinner meeting
West concluded his video with one story of what happened during his recent visit to Mar-a-Lago, and said, “When Trump started basically screaming at me at the table, telling me I was gonna lose,” presumably in reference to a prospective 2024 run for the White House.
The highly successful and ultra-wealthy entertainer and entrepreneur added with a laugh, “I mean, has that ever worked for anyone in history, telling me I’m gonna lose? I’m like, ‘whoa, whoa, hold on Trump — you’re talking to Ye.”

For what it is worth, Trump seemingly responded with a post to his Truth Social account in which he claimed that West had come to him seeking “advice” about the “difficulties” he was having with “his business” and, “to a lesser extent, politics,” and that “we got along great.” In a prior posting, Trump had described the meeting over dinner on the patio at Mar-a-Lago as “quick and uneventful.”
