Remember John Kasich? He’s basically a Democrat now.
Having lost to Donald Trump in 2016, the Republican former governor of Ohio is planning to speak on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden at the Democratic National Convention.
Kasich to stump for Biden
Kasich is just the latest Republican to join an exodus of establishment types who are betraying the party in protest of President Trump.
It’s not a one-way thing: the Biden campaign is actively looking for support from disgruntled RINOs, according to the AP, and Kasich is on the list. He is expected to speak at the DNC next month, although the details are not clear.
It appears to be a strategy to broaden Biden’s coalition and consolidate the full spectrum of the anti-Trump vote behind the favored candidate of the establishment. Biden’s campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, said that support from Republicans could help defuse Trump’s efforts to paint Biden as a pawn of the radical left.
She pointed to support from Republican figures as proof of Biden’s ability to “work across the aisle” and “get things done” (rather than his ability to attract cynical parasites.)
“We welcome the support of anybody who’d rather see Joe Biden be president than Donald Trump,” she said.
Trump brings out RINOs
Like George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, and other Republicans before him, Kasich is now seen by many liberals — the same Democrats who once called him a bigot — as a palatable figure in comparison to Trump, or even a potentially valuable ally in the fight to defeat him.
One might have guessed Kasich’s direction from his support of the president’s impeachment and his failed presidential run, which attracted the fleeting approbation of Democrats who found his squishiness politically useful. Kasich famously staked out middle-of-the-road positions that nobody actually liked, but he proved adept at shifting to the left under the slightest pressure.
“There could be an effort to pass a Constitutional Amendment. I’m not for doing it. I’m for moving on,” he said of same-sex marriage at the time.
With a president who is defending America (and not just talking the talk), weak Republicans like Kasich are joining with the radical zealots looking to tear America down. How’s that for traditional values?
Nice guy Kasich just wants to “get along,” even if it’s with America’s enemies. There’s a reason voters rejected this loser four years ago.
