New York’s Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul made headlines earlier this year when she suggested that conservatives should leave the state because they “do not represent our values.”
Yet as Fox News reported, Hochul appears to have changed her tune. During a recent interview, the governor all but begged Republicans to remain.
“We welcome them to stay”
Hochul made the remarks during an interview with “The Breakfast Club” with radio host Charlamagne tha God, who brought up a National Review article that said Republicans are fleeing New York.
“Well, we have to give them the jobs and, you know, people may not want to be here philosophically,” Fox News quoted Hochul as saying.
“We do advance people’s rights in this state and if that’s something that an individual philosophically doesn’t support, you know, I hope they will stay. We welcome them to stay and hopefully understand why it’s so important for us to have rights for people,” she continued.
“And it’s been a long journey to get to the rights we have here in the state of New York, whether it’s LGBTQ rights, women’s rights that are under assault right now,” the governor insisted.
“I mean, people want to live in a state where whether or not a woman can decide what to do with her own body is unquestioned. I mean, this is why New York state is even more welcoming,” Hochul added.
“People are starting to want to come here from other states, and we embrace them because that’s who we are. We’re so fascinatingly diverse. We welcome people from all over, but also we have jobs now that we didn’t have before. So I encourage everyone to stay,” she concluded.
Fox News reported in 2021 that the most recent census showed New York’s population is dropping, leading the state to lose a congressional seat.
Hochul’s predecessor said “extreme conservatives” have “no place” in state
Hochul is not New York’s first Democrat governor to have told Republicans that they should move elsewhere. Her predecessor, disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo put out a similar message in 2017.
“Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves,” Fox News quoted Cuomo as saying. “Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay?”
“Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are,” he added.
