Kevin McCarthy wants answers from Harris on ‘national security crisis’ at US-Mexico border

It was in March that President Joe Biden first tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead his administration’s efforts to address the “root” causes of a recent surge in migration at the U.S.–Mexico border. But aside from a number of speaking events, it doesn’t seem the VP has done much in that regard.

Now, one of the top Republicans in Congress is demanding answers from Harris on her absence. According to Breitbart, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called in a Friday statement for Harris to brief members of Congress on the state of what he called a “national security crisis” at America’s southern border.

Biden policies prompt chaos

McCarthy said an update is particularly important as the Biden administration has taken a starkly different approach to immigration from its predecessor.

“Immediately after President Biden was sworn into office, he dismantled many policies in place that had kept our border safe and illegal border crossings low,” Leader McCarthy said Friday. “President Biden’s dangerous immigration orders immediately led to a historic crisis along the southern border.”

The congressman noted that when Vice President Harris was first named Biden’s “border czar” in late March, roughly 274,000 migrants had already been apprehended after crossing the southern border illegally since January.

“According to the Biden administration, the Vice President’s mission was ‘stemming the migration to our southern border,’” McCarthy wrote. “Since she was appointed, over 970,000 migrants have been apprehended entering our country at the southern border,” he added.

“Under the Biden Administration,” the GOP leader said, “over 1.2 million migrants [in total] have been apprehended entering our country illegally — and that’s just who our over-worked and under-resourced Border Patrol agents caught.”

Americans first

In his statement, Leader McCarthy went on to reference a new group of migrants numbering around 10,000 who are said to be camped out under a bridge near the border city of Del Rio, Texas.

“It is no coincidence this is happening as Democrats in Congress are moving to pass legislation that would grant immediate citizenship for up to 10 million illegal immigrants,” he charged. “This is a wakeup call to Democrats that their policies are putting American lives in danger and must be abandoned.”

McCarthy said some of the individuals apprehended by border officials in recent months have been “on the terrorist watch list,” and that agents are frequently seizing drugs like fentanyl. “This is not just a humanitarian crisis, this is a direct threat to the safety of Americans across the country,” the Republican stressed. “The Biden Administration must recognize this for what it is: A National Security Crisis,” he declared.

McCarthy ended his statement by saying that Americans “must hear from the people in charge of this failed response.”

“I am inviting the Vice President to brief Members of the Republican Conference next week to provide an update on the Administration’s plan to secure our southern border and our country,” the GOP leader said. “It’s time President Biden and Vice President Harris put the safety of Americans first.”
