LA candidate for mayor proposes massive 1,300 police officer addition

Los Angeles Democratic mayoral candidate Joe Buscaino has proposed an aggressive policing plan for the city that could include up to 1,300 new police officers in a strong contrast with the defund the police agenda of many California lawmakers in his party.

Buscaino is a former police officer who seeks to lead the city to be tough on crime and aggressive in making a safer city.

The Current Crime Wave

The crime wave in Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s jurisdiction “has seen a 92% increase in homicides from a pre-pandemic period over two years, and a 44.39% increase in the past year alone, including a 60% increase in grand theft auto,” he told Newsmax.

“You can see that there’s major crime indicators that are moving massively; yet my board of supervisors won’t even admit that there’s a problem — as it continued trying to defund our department,” Villanueva added.

Responding to Homelessness in LA

“Homelessness makes our city less safe for everyone – for our fellow Angelenos who are experiencing homelessness, for families who just want to be able to use the park in their neighborhood, and for small businesses and the people who use them,” Buscaino said on his campaign website.

“Homelessness is an emergency in the city of LA and we have to treat it with that level of urgency. We have to aim at eradicating homelessness, not simple half-measures that will not get the job done,” he added.

Among his proposals is an anti-camping measure to help make the streets of L.A. safer for residents.

The strong crime response from a leftist candidate may be the combination that resonates with the people of L.A. following recent years of surging crime under liberal leadership.
