The last place in America that many of us would have expected a spectacular celebration of our country’s independence is in the deep blue state of California.
Breitbart reports that on the Fourth of July, however, the sky above Los Angeles County was illuminated with fireworks — despite the threat of significant penalties for those who engaged in such festivities.
Flouting the rules
Prior to the Independence Day holiday, Los Angeles County, like many other localities throughout the country, decided to cancel traditional fireworks displays due to concerns about the coronavirus, as the Los Angeles Times reported.
Along with this, many communities also banned the use of fireworks by individual citizens. According to Breitbart, a news commentator from Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCAL warned viewers that those who ignored the prohibition could face upwards of a $50,000 fine.
But none of this was enough to deter Americans from celebrating the Fourth of July.
Numbers tell the tale
To give an indication of just how many revelers (or scofflaws, depending on one’s perspective) there were, the Los Angeles Times reported that this was one of the heaviest years on record in terms of Fourth of July fireworks-related incidents.
“The [Los Angeles County Fire] department responded to 1,676 calls for service Saturday, compared with an average of 1,100 to 1,200 calls,” a city official told the Times.
The Times went on to report: “In fact, it was the second-busiest day in the department’s history, second only to Feb. 17, 2017, when firefighters responded to 1,777 calls during a rainstorm, [the official] said.”
It is, of course, unfortunate that celebrations of our nation’s independence led to so many calls for emergency assistance. But it also goes to show just how enthusiastic people were this year to celebrate the Fourth of July. It is also worth noting that it wasn’t just individual patriots who were flouting the rules.
“Come visit me in jail”
The Times noted separately that the City of Lancaster, California decided to move forward with its own firework show and keep it open to the public, in defiance of the Los Angeles County ban on such events.
“The ultra-left is trying to steal 4th of July,” R. Rex Parris, the city’s mayor, wrote in a social media post, according to the Times. “In our city, we celebrate being Americans. Please come visit me in jail, because no one is going to stop 4th of July in our city.”
This was the kind of attitude displayed throughout the country on Saturday as Americans marked Indpendence Day the way it was intended. Patriots everywhere could not be more proud.
